Soon after launching the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus at MWC 2017 in Barcelona last month, Lenovo-owned Motorola has today launched the ‘Plus’ variant in India. Successor to last year’s Moto G4 Plus, the new smartphone comes with a slightly compact form factor, new design and equipped with better hardware. Placed in the mid-range segment, the Moto G5 Plus will take on the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Lenovo P2 and Honor 6X. We pitted all four smartphones in comparison based on their price, specifications and features, and here’s how they fare.
Price and Availability: The Moto G5 Plus is offered in two variants – 3GB of RAM + 16GB storage priced at Rs 14,999 and 4GB of RAM + 32GB storage priced at Rs 16,999. The smartphone is exclusively available via Flipkart. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is offered in three variants — 2GB of RAM + 32GB storage priced at Rs 9,999, 3GB of RAM + 32GB storage priced at Rs 10,999 and whereas the 4GB of RAM + 64GB storage will set you back by Rs 12,999. The Lenovo P2 is also Flipkart exclusive and offered in two variants — Rs 16,999 for 3GB RAM variant, and Rs 17,999 for the 4GB RAM variant. The Honor 6X, on the other hand, is exclusively available via Amazon India — 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant priced at Rs 12,999 and 4GB of RAM + 64GB storage variant priced at Rs 15,999.
Display: The Moto G5 Plus features a 5.2-inch full HD IPS LCD panel along with a feature called ‘Moto Display’ where you get time, notifications and other alerts on your the screen without having to unlock it. The feature works similar to ‘Always On’ display that we have seen on LG G5, G6 and Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge. The Redmi Note 4, Lenovo P2 and Honor 6X, on the other hand, all feature slightly larger 5.5-inch full HD displays.
Hardware: At the heart of the Moto G5 Plus, Lenovo P2 and Redmi Note 4 runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC (eight Cortex-A53 cores). The chipset is built on 14nm process, and it has proven to offer the right mix of power, performance and efficiency. Honor 6X, on the other hand, is powered by Huawei’s home brewed HiSilicon Kirin 655 octa-core SoC.
The Moto G5 Plus is offered in two variants — 3GB RAM + 16GB storage and 4GB RAM + 32GB storage. The Redmi Note 4 is offered in three variants — 2GB RAM + 32GB storage, 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB of RAM + 64GB storage. While the Lenovo P2 comes with 3GB of RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB of RAM + 32GB storage, the Honor 6X is offered in 3GB of RAM + 32GB storage, and 4GB of RAM + 64GB storage.
The Moto G5 Plus is the only smartphone in the comparison, which has dedicated slots for two SIM cards and a microSD card. The rest of the three feature hybrid SIM card slots, allowing you to use two SIM cards or one SIM card and a microSD card.
Cameras: The Moto G5 Plus features a 12-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/1.7, which is the same sensor as on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Up front is a 5-megapixel camera of aperture f/2.2 for selfies and video calling. The Redmi Note 4 and Lenovo P2 feature 12-megapixel rear cameras and 5-megapixel front-facing snappers.
The Honor 6X, on the other hand, features dual-rear camera setup — a 12-megapixel primary camera to capture photos and a 2-megapixel secondary snapper for capturing depth information. The setup allows you to add DSLR-like bokeh effects to your photos – before and after clicking them. Up front is an 8-megapixel camera for selfies and video calling.
Operating System: One of the advantages of Moto G5 Plus is that it ships with Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box. The Redmi Note 4, Lenovo P2 and Honor 6X, on the other hand, run Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS wrapped under the respective company’s custom UI. An update to Android Nougat OS for the Redmi Note 4 and Honor 6X is due to roll out in the coming months.
